Your Questions, Answered
Starting therapy can feel unfamiliar, particularly if you are not sure what to expect. These answers are designed to make the process clearer and help you decide whether Elementa may be the right fit for you.
-
Once we receive your enquiry, a member of the Elementa team will respond to discuss availability and arrange an initial assessment with one of our Clinical Psychologists.
You do not need to know exactly what kind of therapy you need before contacting us. The assessment is there to help us understand what you are experiencing and consider the most appropriate next steps.
-
The initial assessment is a 50-minute online session with a Clinical Psychologist. It gives us an opportunity to explore what has brought you to therapy, the difficulties you are currently facing, and what you would like to gain from support.
Following the session, you will receive a short written summary and a proposed or agreed plan for next steps.
-
The initial assessment costs £130.
Ongoing 50-minute therapy sessions are also charged at £130 per session.
-
Both the initial assessment and ongoing therapy appointments last 50 minutes.
-
All Elementa appointments are currently delivered online.
Online therapy can offer greater flexibility, comfort and discretion, while reducing the time and practical demands associated with travelling, parking and fitting appointments around daily life.
-
We work with adults aged 18 and over.
Our clients come from a wide range of backgrounds and may be seeking support with anxiety, low mood, depression, stress, burnout, trauma, relationships, grief, self-esteem, identity, life transitions, emotional dysregulation or neurodivergence.
-
We do not provide individual therapy for anyone under the age of 18.
We may offer support or coaching to parents who want help navigating communication, boundaries, relationships or the needs of a child or adolescent.
-
Each of our Clinical Psychologists brings different areas of experience and therapeutic approaches, while sharing the same commitment to warm, evidence-based and tailored care.
We will consider your needs, goals, preferences and practitioner availability when thinking about the most appropriate match.
-
Our Clinical Psychologists draw on a range of evidence-based approaches, which may include:

The exact approach will depend on your needs and what is agreed with your psychologist.

No.
Some people arrive with a clear preference, while others have no idea which approach may be suitable. Your Clinical Psychologist can guide you through the options and explain what may be most helpful based on your experiences, goals and circumstances.escription

-
Neuro-affirming therapy recognises that neurodivergence is part of a person’s identity and way of experiencing the world, rather than something that needs to be corrected.
The work may involve developing greater self-understanding, exploring the impact of masking, identifying individual needs and strengths, and finding practical ways of navigating relationships, work and daily life.
-
Some members of the team have professional training and experience in neurodevelopmental assessment.
However, assessment availability should be confirmed directly with Elementa, as the services offered may depend on practitioner capacity and the purpose of the assessment.
-
No. Clinical Psychologists do not prescribe medication.
Where medication may be relevant, you would need to speak with your GP, psychiatrist or another appropriately qualified medical professional.
-
Yes. What you discuss in therapy is treated as confidential.
There are some professional and legal limits to confidentiality, particularly where there is a serious concern about your safety or the safety of another person. Your psychologist will explain these limits clearly at the beginning of your work together.
-
No. Elementa is not an emergency or crisis service.
We may not be suitable for people experiencing immediate or significant risk, active psychosis, severe and ongoing self-harm, serious risk to others, dementia, or needs requiring intensive multidisciplinary support.
If you are in immediate danger or believe you may act on thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, contact emergency services or an appropriate urgent mental health service.
-
If we believe your needs would be better supported by another service or professional, we will explain this sensitively and aim to suggest more appropriate options where possible.
The initial assessment is intended to help determine suitability, not to pressure you into continuing therapy.
-
The frequency of sessions will be discussed with your psychologist and agreed based on your needs and the nature of the work.
Many clients begin with weekly sessions, but the arrangement may vary depending on individual circumstances and clinical recommendations.
-
There is no single answer.
Some people benefit from focused, time-limited therapy, while others need longer-term support. The likely duration will depend on your goals, the difficulties being addressed and how the work develops.
Progress and next steps can be reviewed throughout therapy.
-
Yes. You are free to stop therapy.
Where possible, we encourage you to discuss thoughts about ending with your psychologist so the work can be brought to a close in a thoughtful and supportive way. Endings can be an important opportunity to reflect on progress and plan how you will carry the work forward.
-
You are welcome to raise this during your assessment.
A previous experience may affect how safe or hopeful therapy feels now. Your psychologist will take this seriously and work with you to understand what was unhelpful, what you may need differently, and whether Elementa can offer an approach that feels more suitable.
-
No.
You do not need a diagnosis, referral or fully formed explanation of what is wrong. Many people seek therapy because they feel overwhelmed, stuck, low, anxious or unlike themselves without knowing exactly why.
-
No. You can contact Elementa directly without a GP referral.
-
You will need:
a reliable internet connection
a device with a camera and microphone
a private space where you feel able to speak openly
enough uninterrupted time for the 50-minute session
Using headphones may also help with privacy.
-
Elementa should have a clear cancellation policy explaining the notice required and whether late cancellations are chargeable.
This should be confirmed before therapy begins and included in the practice terms so expectations are clear from the outset.
-
Elementa primarily provides individual therapy. However, where it may be helpful and with your consent, your psychologist may occasionally suggest involving a partner, family member or someone else in your support network in a joint session.
This would be considered on an individual basis and is not a routine part of therapy or something we would commonly recommend.
-
Queries around medication can be explored within the sessions. Your Psychologist can help you navigate this process but will not prescribe medication themselves.
-
You do not need to have everything worked out before getting in touch. An initial assessment can help you understand what support may be appropriate and whether Elementa feels like the right place to begin.
